The ‘’Nomadic’’ concept took a huge part in the Moroccan history and culture. A lifestyle that still existing and could resist to all the modern aspects and country’s development. This typical population still have the same habits and way of living just like it has been 100 years ago. However, year after year the Moroccan nomads become less and less. Ait Atta tribe in the Atlas Mountains for example used to englobe more than 500 families 50 years ago. Now only 50 of them who still exercising nomadism.
For the nomads, every life detail is involved around the natural resources (Herbs, water, animals….) and wildness. They move from area-to-area cruising for pastures and the convenable weather for their agriculture activities. Those people are adopted by the energy of nature, they have their own philosophy of life; Nomadism as a form of freedom.
Numerous other questions come in mind about nomads, where they live? What they eat? How they manage their lives? …
Most of them live in the Atlas Mountains in a goat-hair tent, when semi nomads choose to get installed in a tent or a cave, while others are more stable and settled in the valleys or villages (For example: Boutghrar, Dades valley, and around Todgha gorges). Another category lives its nomadism far away in small communities in the heart of Morocco’s desert, around Erg Chebbi dunes, Erg Chegaga… just like Touareg nomads located in the north of Mali.
Animals’ husbandry (rabbets, goats, camels…), agriculture are the two main income sources for nomads. They have their own weekly market where they practice the traditional trading and shop all their needs. We can affirm that the souk plays the role of social media, it’s an opportunity to meet other siblings and families and get their updates.
Nomads’ life is harmony between men and women. We can say that the female presence adds that artistical soul to the nomadism concept, she’s considered as an artist in the Amazigh culture. She plays with colors and tissues to give birth to these beautiful colorful carpets, blankets, and protector tent for her family.
Mountain and desert tourism can help those nomads to connect with different people from other cultures and give them the opportunity to diversify their source of incomes. They can offer their experience in the wild area and carry your luggage where there is no transportation.
